A grant from the SCRA, provided two community visual and music artists to collaborate in an arts integration project during a residency with the students and arts teachers at three artsBASICS Schools. Community artists paid four different visits to the schools, while students continued to work on their project with their school arts teachers in-between these consultations.  The first time the artists came, they introduced their work and, together with the arts teachers and the students, conducted a dialogue that included involving the students in thinking about the process of creating.  At Jackson Elementary, paper sculptural animal hats were created by 4th graders in art class with help from Mr. Meeker and guest artist, David Smith, a community sculptor.  The music program involved selections whose lyrics tell about what happens to animals in the winter and was developed by 4th grade students with Miss Mitchell and guest artist, Mitzi Harris, who taught at McKinley Elementary and now at St. Ambrose.  Students played music with xylophones while wearing the animal hats they had created and also incorporated and performed movement expressions as well. Guest artist and materials were graciously sponsored by artsBASICS, a non-profit organization that partners with Davenport Schools to promote arts integration throughout the curriculum and authentic and sustainable arts education experiences.  Special thank you to our guest artists, the 4th grade teachers, Mrs. Bechen, and the artsBASICS program for making this program possible.
